Beating Around The Bush When You Need To Set It On Fire

It’s in the way you try to control my response,

withholding the truth to minimize collateral.

Have I not created a safe place for you to be honest?

Is this how I am rewarded for being an open book?

You’ll share with everyone else what it is you need to tell me.

It never reaches my ears from your mouth.

When you have my audience,

you elect to hide behind a veil of ambiguity.

But, your veil is poorly woven.

Your eyes betray the bullet you have in the chamber,

You are exposed.

So, go ahead.

Pull the trigger.

Hammer down.

I’ll decide if I’ve got the time to bleed.

Dreams turn to nightmares,

Sleep turns to restlessness,

The sanctuary I found when I closed my eyes is gone.

I’m too young to feel this old,

But this is what becomes of me when I see you walk the highway.

I’ve screamed and begged for you to return to the narrow.

My vocal cords are strung out,

and I’m sinking in a sea of remorse.

I’ve seen the wolves that will bite you,

the snakes that will draw you into chains.

I never thought I’d have to let you go,

but I can’t make your decisions for you.

I release you into the hands of the Almighty,

He’s trustworthy and faithful to keep one as precious as you,

So run,

Run, baby, run…

right into the belly of a whale.

Sticks & Stones

You hold the nails to this coffin,

Drive away.

Seal me up, lower me down.

Maybe I’ll find warmth in the earth’s embrace,

because I haven’t found it in you.

Your tongue is brutal,

and your silence austere.

Every condemning remark,

a symphony of syllables coated in venom.

You could speak life,

but you choose death.

Your words are sticks and stones,

and they break me.

Blankets of Chains, Anchors of Shame

Where there was once warmth,

a frigid air is blowing.

Emanating from your eyes,

confirmed by your posture.

You used to stand tall,

now you sit broken.

The weight of whatever it may be,

is crushing your back,

snuffing your resolve.

You’ve been faithful to follow,

been faithful to obey,

and now you’re in the valley where the darkness illuminates your weaknesses.

The ground opens up to reveal Hell’s chains shackling your soul with the anchors of shame,

and you can’t find the strength to resist.

Though you’ve been bound,

You hang on to those chains like a blanket.

This burden is not too much for you to bear,

because it was meant for you to…

Let go.

Let go.

Let go.

Your Father will break every chain.

He has searched your soul and known you,

All of your glory and all of your misfortunes.

Even in this dark place,

He smiles on you like the Sun bathing the Earth in its heat.

Renewal is coming, renewal is here,

He is drawing you near,

bringing purity, and burning away your iniquity.

You were bathed in blood and made Holy…

When you thought you were going backwards…

You were really moving forward.

Abyssal Home

You haven’t died and gone to hell,

You’re living there now.

Hiding your weeping,

Gnashing your teeth.

Buried in chemicals, drowning in drink,

I cannot tell where they end and you begin.

Fist in the air, resisting the light,

embracing darkness, putting up a front of self-control,

You think this facade will suffice to hide the truth.

My eyes have pierced your walls to see what they conceal:

a broken little girl anchored in her sorrows.

You rise in defiance of the One who sits next to you silent,

taking in all your blame, embracing the lashings of your tongue.

He remains near you in this abyssal home you’ve made for yourself.

He is patient, He is kind, He’s not keeping a record like you are.

I’ve seen Him kissing your stone of a heart.

I hope,

I pray,

that one day soon you’ll rise like a phoenix from this place,

but for now…

you live in ashes.

In the Beginning…

I found the purpose of us all,

It goes back to the days before The Fall,

When we walked in the Garden,

When we beheld You, and You beheld us,

When You shared with us what You created,

The honor given to Adam to name Your creatures,

The compassion to give him a partner.

You withheld nothing from us.

Gave us a choice and respected it when You told us not to eat of that tree.

Disciplined us in Love, and let us discover that the darkness can not satisfy.

The knowledge of Good and Evil cannot hold a candle up to the knowledge of You.

Those lines disappear when I am consumed in You.

Update

The tempo of life has picked up a lot lately, and I have not had much time to post things on here. I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I am in the process of writing an album. I have a name for every track and a theme. The album is appropriately named “The Valley of Shadows” as it is a journey through darkness and into light. I wanted to write something that allows people to address the raw emotions that accompany struggle and let them really feel it, all the while pointing to Jesus. The album starts very dark and begins to be filled with more and more light as Christ brings the revelation of His love and peace into tough places. The inspiration for this has come through my own walk with Christ, and I draw a lot from previous writings that can viewed here. If there is one thing that I have been given to proclaim, its that Jesus values us being open with Him even when we’re frustrated and angry with Him. His table is open to His children to ask hard questions, and be frank. Openness is a component of healthy relationship. If I can’t be open with God, I will not ever be truly open with people. So, ta-da, there you have it.

I am in no rush to finish the album, but have definitely felt a push to at least begin writing it. Lord knows when this project will reach fruition, but I will not forsake excellence in the lyrics or music for a quick release.

I pray that you all receive a deeper revelation of the Lord’s love for you today, and pour it out to others. Stay tuned!

Pour

I drink of You,

You drink of me.

Together we find unity.

You draw me in,

I become one in You.

My destiny has been You since the beginning of time.

I resisted, I fled,

I returned to Your great love,

finding grace and mercy for my immaturity,

compassion among failure.

Foggy With A Chance of Disaster

Will I risk it all this time,

just to find my pearls thrown to swine?

Will you cherish my investments in you,

or bury them in the ground?

When I knock on your door,

what will I find?

Is your heart a place of chaos and calamity?

Is it light as a feather as you float through the obstacles you meet?

Will I find a dead end at the resolution of this pursuit?

Will I discover a treasure like none I’d ever dreamed of?

I steer this ship through unfamiliar seas,

not knowing if I’ll find land,

or if this voyage will find me sinking.

There was nothing these young eyes could see,

that would keep from embarking on this journey.

Let grace be the wind,

lest I find myself in stormy seas once again.

Hurt. Broken. Abandoned?

Down here it’s cold and wet,

and I have to live with this person that I call me.

My questions echo off walls of damp stone,

and my cries resound in my own ears.

The fire came and burned away my dreams,

The wind came and blew away my resolve,

The water came and washed away my poor foundations,

I sought shelter here in the recesses of the earth,

but I only found loneliness.

When I beheld that I was alone,

I heard a whisper say,

“Silence is an answer, not an absence of My presence.

Can you only find Me on the mountain?

Can you only find Me in success?

When you are shaken, and when you are sifted I Am.

You never left My hands.”

In the cave of questioning,

You are still worth seeking.

Just when I thought I found where You’re not,

I found where You are,

With me.
